On September 22, UNI Gaming met with the representatives on CONTRATUH in Brasilia. CONTRATUH is one of the biggest affiliates of UNI Gaming in the region. For ten years, they have been fighting to legalise bingos after the law banning them was introduced in 2004. Since then, thousands of workers lost their jobs or are involved in illegal gambling establishments.
The president of the union, Moacyr Roberto Tesch Auersvald described their lobby activities and possibilities to continue discussing with some politicians after the elections. They have a good plan how to attract more allies. They think that early in 2015 when new government/parliament are well-established it would be possible to organise another regional debate on gaming regulation.
The issue of the Ultimate Fighting Championship was also discussed. Many fighters come from Brazil to the US where they do not have any rights and are exploited in violent fights. Brazilian colleagues agreed to co-operate with UNI Gaming and support its colleagues from UNITE HERE in the US who were trying to raise public awareness about the negative impact of cage fights to the society and to organise those workers. They have been running a campaign to empower athletes in their relationship with promotions through collective bargaining wherever possible, enacting policies and enforcing existing employment standards in Brazil, Mexico, Germany, Sweden and the United Kingdom. Brazilian colleagues were ready to support the cause and to raise it with the politicians reposnsible for sports in the country.
