Walmart has come under fire from its own workers yet again after one of the largest acts of civil disobedience against the company took place in Los Angeles.
Around 500 workers took to the streets to demonstrate against the world's largest retailer's poverty-level wages. More than 50 workers and supporters were arrested without incident after the demo.
Walmart workers have been ramping up the pressure on the commerce giant. Fair wages are top of the list of demands with workers from the national organisation OUR Walmart calling on the company to use a fraction of its 17 billion profits to pay a minimum of 25,000 a year for full time work and to end its illegal retaliation against workers who choose to speak out.
UNI is the global union for the commerce sector and is working closely with its affiliate UFCW and OUR Walmart to help Walmart workers across the United States. UNI Global Union's Head of Commerce, Alke Boessiger said, "We are beside every Walmart worker across America, and especially those who are brave enough to take a stand against the Goliath that Walmart has become.
“Unless Walmart changes its behaviour, begins to act responsibly, offers fair wages above the poverty line and respects its workers' right to speak out, then it can expect no end to the trouble these workers can make.
"The UNI Walmart Global Union Alliance will continue to struggle alongside Walmart workers around the world for their rights for respect, to freedom of association and collection bargaining."
More than 100 unfair labor practice allegations have been filed against Walmart with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) for illegal firings and disciplinary actions against workers who have participated in legally protected strikes and to deter them from speaking out.
A two day strike is underway in Los Angeles. Workers, community supporters and economic policy experts outlined the growing nationwide movement to demand Walmart end illegal retaliation and improve jobs.
