On March 3-4, 2008, the Task Force on ASEAN Migrant Workers and UNI Apro joined the Vietnam Lawyers Association (VLA) and other partners in Hanoi to hold the Vietnam National Consultation on the Protection and the Promotion of the Rights of Migrant Workers. Over 100 participants from Government agencies, mass organizations, the Vietnam trade union movement, and national and international NGOs joined this consultation.Participatory group-work provided the basis for the formulation of a number of policy recommendations to the Government of Vietnam, ASEAN, and to national and regional civil society organizations. The VLA and its partners have stated they are providing this statement to the top-levels of the Government, including the Office of the State President, the Office of the Prime Minister, and all concerned line Ministries. National news coverage of the National Consultation was extensive, with long reports on Vietnam National TV and radio, and articles in all the major Vietnamese daily newspapers. It also made it to the front-page in the Viet Nam News, the national English language daily of the country. UNI MLC Help Desk, formed by UNI Apro affiliates in Malaysia to assist migrant workers in Malaysia has offered to assist the migrant workers from Vietnam.
