Once all 12 presses are rolling, the plant, 20 miles north of London, will print 1.5 million copies of the Sun, 550,000 copies of the Times and contract print 600,000 copies of the Daily Telegraph each night.

The plant opened last week and is expected to be fully operational by the end of April. It spells the end of printing by News International at Wapping plant in east London.

"Our investment should be ample answer to those who believe the business of journalism, in print, is a business for yesterday's readers, not tomorrow's,” said James Murdoch, chairman of News Corp. Europe and Asia. “We believe that print will continue to be a driving force in our business, even as we expand and grow in this connected age."

News Corp. recently took control of the Wall Street Journal, but there are no immediate plans to publish that paper's European edition at the new plant.

Rupert Murdoch, chairman of News Corp. is one of three interested bidders for Tribune Company’s Newsday.
