Alerting the regulatory authorities responsible to monitor and regulate the financial industry about the current turmoil in the global markets was the main concern of the National Union of Bank Employees in Philippines. Jose P Umali, National President of NUBE who led a delegation to UNI Apro office in Singapore, responded after a briefing about the global financial crisis.



NUBE has a biannual exchange program with Singapore Bank Employees Union. Both unions exchange delegations and UNI Apro facilitates the exchange programs between the two affiliates.



Ten delegation members were briefed about the Global Financial Crisis by Jayasri Priyalal, Director of UNI Apro Finance, during their visit to the UNI Apro office in Singapore on 15 April 2008. Chairman, of NUBE Philippines Eddie Divangracia said that bank unions particularly representing employees in foreign banks are keen to organize the employees in the call center industry in Philippines.



UNI Finance priorities for 2008 was explained to the delegation. UNI publications on Private Equity and Sovereign Wealth Funds were made available to the delegation following a brief presentation. Priyalal emphasized the need to organize and recruit more members into trade unions as a priority to the NUBE Philippines. Furthermore, he requested NUBE to reach out to other trade unions that are representing employees in finance sector and persuade them to become part of UNI Global Union in order to strengthen the finance sector unions in Philippines.
