2,500 service workers at Los Angeles airport walked off the job yesterday in support of their campaign for a collective agreement to cover workers across California, demanding living wages, affordable health care and better training and health and safety protection.



Airport services workers at Los Angeles airport provide services for major airlines including United, American, and Southwest Airlines are paid an average of only USD10.50/hour or USD19,000 per year—far short of the USD54,000 per year that the Economic Policy Institute reports is required to support a family of four in California. 97% of airline contracted service workers have no access to affordable health care. Despite being exposed to many health and safety risks, workers are rarely provided with adequate training or equipment to do their jobs properly. It comes as no surprise that turnover for contracted service workers in airports is around 50% annually.



Workers at the Los Angeles airport are organising with co-workers across the state and SEIU Local 1877, aiming to negotiate master agreements to cover 5,000 subcontracted airline service workers in Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Jose and Oakland.

Following coordination by UNI, members of FNV Bondgenoten in the Netherlands will support Los Angeles workers with a leafletting action at Schiphol Airport in the Netherlands tomorrow.
