Fiji Post and Telecom Employees' Association lodged a notice that it would conduct a strike ballot from January 19 to 23.



Attar Singh , the General Secretary of the union, said the action was being taken because both Post Fiji and Telecom Fiji had failed to settle the workers' claims. "Workers cannot be justifiably asked to compromise on their just entitlements when shareholders continue to draw healthy dividends", he said.



Several attempts were made to settle the log of claims from early October of 2008. Telecom's proposal was for a 2-3 per cent increase but according to the union, workers were entitled to a rise of at least 5.8 per cent based on the annual average inflation rate at the end of March 2008.



The union has indicated that its 1200 members around the country will start taking secret ballot for strike action on the January 19th.
