From the meetings with HKCTU and UNI Apro affiliates in Hong Kong on 2nd March 2009, the message was clear – Organise! Organise! Organise!
Elizabeth Tang, Chief Executive of HKCTU reported that there are many enterprises and multi national companies in Hong Kong that is not unionized and that support from Global Union Federations like UNI are most welcome to assist in building strategies to organize the workers into trade unions and enter into negotiation for a collective agreement. UNI Apro affiliates and organizers from the Telecom, Postal and Logistics, Disneyland, ISS and Commerce attended a get together “steam boat” dinner and discussion about the events that are unfolding in Hong Kong brought about by the global crisis. Thru the dialogs that were held, it was clear that there is room for improvement in building stronger network of trade union movement in Hong Kong whereby the unions can assist each other to build new unions and at the same time develop their own agendas. We had the opportunity to meet with the young and motivated organizers from UNI sectors. Discussions were held on alternate options to handle some of the issues and at the same time identify issues that we can commonly work closely with. The two days meetings had resulted in a renewed effort in building stronger network amongst our affiliates in Hong Kong and UNI / UNI Apro has identified certain priorities as a focus of organizing in Hong Kong. Hong Kong has been identified as one of the two priority country for organizing in our region. Phillip Bowyer, UNI Deputy General Secretary and Alice Chang, UNI Apro Director for Commerce were in Hong Kong on 1-2Mar09 and were assisted by Michael Siu, Director of UNI DOC Hong Kong |
