On 20-21 of July, the representatives of the UNI Moscow office came to Azerbaijan, and, after visiting a number of workplaces of the TU members, held a workshop on communication, as a tool of trade union development and growth, for the staff and activists of Khidmat –IS (the trade union of Commerce and Catering workers – a UNI affiliate in Azerbaijan), Rabita –IS (the Communication Workers Trade Union, also the UNI affiliate).
The activities of the trade unions in Azerbaijan, the further integration of the UNI affiliates into UNI activities, and an implementation of the “Say “yes” to the Union” campaign in Azerbaijan,were discussed by the UNI Moscow Office representatives with the leaders of the UNI affiliates. Both organizations stated their commitment towards organizing, as the increasingly important pattern of trade union activity. The Khidmat-IS leaders pointed out their decision to implement these relatively new practices in commerce sector. The leaders of Rabita-IS decided to make focus on organizing in mobile phone companies, first of all – in Azercell Telecom, ( a subsidiary of Telia Sonera AB, an important MNC, operating in Europe and Eurasia); Rabita-IS and UNI representatives scheduled jointly the first steps in this direction. During a meeting with the UNI MO representatives, the Chair of the Confederation of the Trade Unions of Azerbaijan, Sattar Mekhbaliev, and the Deputy Chair of Confederation, Ilyas Aliev (who is also the Khidmat-IS chair), welcomed the UNI activities in Azerbaijan, and encouraged the participation of Azerbaijan trade unions in the programs of Global Union Federations, including UNI.
