UniCredit: EWC and company endorse equal opportunities

“Management and unions in Unicredit show again how both sides of industry can build together a European-wide system of industrial relations,” said Oliver Roethig, Head of UNI Finance. “The European works council and UniCredit’s CEO Profumo are at the forefront of innovative industrial relations in the finance industry. The challenges of a complex multinational company can only be tackled jointly and through dialogue between management, unions and workers’ representatives.”
The joint declaration on equal opportunities and non-discrimination complements two other documents: the declaration on training, learning and professional development of 2008 and the European works council agreement that already provides for fundamental principles on industrial relations.
The new declaration stems from the strong belief that managing inner diversities through policies based on equal opportunities and non-discrimination, contributes to develop a corporate culture of diversity, which will improve the working environment, thus enhancing a stronger sense of inclusion and achieving better quality of life at work.
Fundamental principles of the declaration are:
- Equal treatment and same dignity for each diversity
- The culture of diversity as a joint and cross-organisational process
- Meritocracy as the basis for equal opportunities and non-discrimination
The declaration is underscored by a joint commitment to overcome gaps in diversity and social dialogue. It also stresses the role of individuals and in particular of managers in implementing the principles. The parties share in the aim to spread and improve best practice in Unicredit on equal opportunities and non-discrimination.
Management and workers representatives agreed to monitor the implementation of the declaration regularly in the meetings of the European Works Council of UniCredit.
The declaration builds on CSR principles, including the UN Global Compact, and the statement of UNI Europa Finance with the European employers’ associations of the banking industry on “Employment & Social Affairs in the European Banking Sector: Some aspects related to CSR”.
