AXA, DHL, IBM, HSBC, Vodafone,TNT, Tata AIG, and the names go on, of the global companies that UNI organisers in India think should be the targets of campaigns. They were included in the conclusions of the three day workshop for organisers held in Hyderabad, 14-16 September. And in almost all of these companies mentioned the big global temporary work agencies Adecco, Manpower and Kelly's are major suppliers of workers. The commerce, security and graphical sectors were not specifically examined in the workshop but if they were added then other world wide known names such as Carrefour and Tesco, Group4 and ISS or Donnelley's would appear in the lists. In brief: Organising in India means organising globally. Organising globally means organising in India. The workshop brought together new organisers for UNI from Hyderabad, Bangalore, Delhi, Kolkota and Kochi. The workshop, sponsored by SASK Finland, was designed to give basic information to the new organisers on the trade union situation and laws in India and on organising techniques and the planning and running of campaigns. There were 18 organisers participating almost all in their twenties and 40% women. Not quite the 50% UNI is aiming for but getting there. And now the hard work starts. In the next weeks and months the organisers will be working on mapping and planning campaigns in their different areas of responsibilities. The clear message coming out of the workshop was it can be done. With effort, education, team work and the bags of enthusiasm and talent on display in the three days UNI Global Union's organisers will succeed. |
