UNI europa urges MEPs to finalise telecom package negotiations
With view to the ongoing conciliation negotiations on the telecom package, UNI europa has written to the Members of the European Parliament, stressing the importance of a compromise between Council and European Parliament.
Following two years of difficult negotiations, the negotiators have now the chance to conclude a new telecom regulation that will have an important impact on employment in the European ICT sector. Recognising the importance of investment in high-speed internet as a major factor for economic growth and employment, the adoption of the telecom package will be essential for the telecom sector in times of economic recession.
Currently, a heated controversy on the so-called amendment 138 dealing with internet users’ rights - that blocked the adoption of the legislation in May - might threaten the success of negotiations.
UNI europa has called upon the Members of the European Parliament to negotiate a compromise that strikes a fair balance between internet users’ rights, legal security for consumers and the rights of rights holders where their content would be protected against digital theft.
Such a compromise should be found without jeopardizing a final agreement and adoption of this important legislative package.
The adoption of the telecom regulation is crucial, in particular with regard to workers’ rights, the regulatory predictability and the encouragement for investment in infrastructure and NGN that are recognised in the text already adopted by the European Parliament.
UNI europa urges MEPs to support a compromise that respects the fundamental rights of the EU citizens, the rights of rights holders in the creative industries and stimulates economic growth and job creation in Europe.
