Activists Empowered to Counter Global Change

Participants at a recent UNI APRO FES Course in Jakarta, Indonesia on Campaigning and Organsing to Counter global challenges were enthusiastic and confident that they will be able to contribute further in the development of their unions by applying the skills and knowledge that they had acquired in the course. They had learnt that trade unions need more than just negotiation and collective bargaining in order to protect themselves from global changes. They realised that they have a big part to play in organising and campaigning and applying UNI Breakthrough strategic plans.
Twenty two participants from UNI affiliates in Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines and Thailand took part in the seminar. The five day course was participated by union organisers and young activists. The course was designed to assist them to strengthen the union in the workplace by motivating the participants to be aware of the global changes that are taking place around them and for them to strategically prepare to respond to these changes. The course aims to improve the skills of the participants or communication, organising, campaigning and strategic planning.
It will assist them to develop their skills, knowledge and confidence in doing organising work. It is also designed to motivate them and instil in them a sense of responsibility and commitment to motivate others so that all workers and members will be inspired to become ‘union activists’.
This course uses a rights based approach concept to motivate members and an organising approach to recruitment and workplace unionism which means encouraging unions to solve problems collectively and bargain collectively rather than individually.
The course ended on a high note with the participants motivation strengthened by deep bond of camaraderie developed during the course especially among the younger participants. The participants were determined to complete their project work and were very enthusiastic at making a difference when they return to their country.
