Union Forum of the Americas receives UNI Americas’ proposals
|
During the Americas Union Forum, celebrated on August 12th in the city of Asunción del Paraguay, the attendants could learn and share UNI Americas Breaking Through proposal. More than 300 people representing most of the countries of the Americas could receive, the proposals and reflections of different union organisations, and also their perspective as regards human rights and environmental issues presented during that day. In the morning, a clear and detailed exposition of the content of UNI Americas’ proposal was offered, highlighting the fact that UNI was the only Global Union Federation to be present at the Forum and to expose a work proposal. The necessity of permanently working to consolidate the political incidence of unions as a real means to make a qualitative progress for the labour movement was also emphasised. UNI Americas expressed that it is important to be aware that the political union capacity lies to a great extent in the strength derived from a strong and high level of membership; in the appropriate and permanent revision of the possibilities to decisively fulfil the objectives (permanent analysis to identify opportunities to get the expected results) It was also highlighted that UNI Americas is working hard with multinationals, with the aim of guaranteeing respect of fundamental rights and the achievement of global or regional framework agreements with these companies. The Union Forum and UNI Americas made a call to take advantage of the opportunities arisen from the new political situation in most countries of the Americas and stressed that it is an urgent and permanent obligation of the labour movement to work in that direction. In the same way, it was emphasized that it was essential that solidarity actions should be carried out in those countries with a very different situation like Colombia and Guatemala, undergoing serious crises, but also in countries like Honduras and Panamá. The Union Forum declared that it was necessary to build alliances and take belligerent actions in the union level in relation to future political electoral scenarios. It is clear that if political changes take place, the achievements might be lost as a response of the most conservative sectors, which will be evidence of an attitude of revenge, like in the case of Brazil. UNI Americas participated in these reflections and expressed its decision to join the necessary actions that will define most alliances in the Americas. All the attendants, and especially UNI Americas, insisted in paying attention, and providing all the possible resources in the support of the workers of Haiti. It was acknowledged that the situation continues to be very serious and that little progress has been made; nothing can make us think that either the inhabitants or the workers might have any possibility of an integral reconstruction. The case of Haiti must be of permanent concern for the labour movement of the Americas. Contact: jose.molina@uniglobalunion.org |
