Today, at a press conference in Swiss capital Bern Commerce affiliated UNIA drew attention to a new legislative initiave named "Lüscher", which aims at removing the remaining legslaition on opening hours. Over the years, employers succesfully have used a salami method to increase the hours that shops can be open for example by introducing exceptions for touristic areas.





Due to the political system in Switzerland there has been a large number of referendums on the issue and since 1996 greater adjustments of the legislation have been defeated. In 22 out of 32 (69%) cantonal and local referendums derogation of the law have been defeated and within the last 5 years this tendency have increased claiming support as strong as 88% among the electorate.
