Solidarity Support for Bank Workers in Turkey

Turkish bank workers are not allowed to strike by law as they are considered an ‘essential service’. The Turkish Government promised the ILO that they would change the law but recently withdrew from this commitment. This is not acceptable. The Turkish Government must repeal these laws!



This ban on the right to strike is in contravention to core labour standards as laid out in ILO Conventions, of which Turkey is a signatory. The Banking sector does not provide essential services within the meaning of the ILO Conventions on the right to strike

The Turkish banking unions together with UNI Global Union, have campaigned on this change since 2005 and have taken the issue to the European Union and the ILO.



The UNI World Congress calls on the Turkish Government to fulfill its commitment to the ILO and immediately remove the prohibition of strikes in the banking sector in the current revision of this legislation.
