Lima. At a press conference, the General Secretary of the General Confederation of Workers of Peru, CGTP, Mario Huamán, announced the realisation of a National Journey of Struggle on February 9th Wednesday, with the aim of rejecting the decrees of urgency passed by the Aprist government, through which the small amount of public active assets that belong to Peruvians shall be put up for auction, apart from leaving the country without the possibility of articulating a National Development Plan, in which strategic sectors like ports, energy, water and others could be reinforced.
At the same time, he mentioned that the protest was intended to demand that Congress should insist on the enactment of the Law that protects sugar companies and has been approved by Parliament, but inexplicably objected by the Executive Power, in benefit of the creditors, many of them represented by the current Minster of Economy, Ismael Benavides, and of a certain economic sector which seeks to promote the latifundia system in the country.
Huamán asserted that privatisations have produced great damage to Peruvian family’s economy, due to the raise in the cost of services and products of first necessity, like electricity and telecommunications, among others. He added that instead of elaborating a plan of natural gas masification, as a way of reducing the high cost of living, the Aprist government reduces taxes and thus generates more profits for the creditors and reduces the workers’ purchasing power, who also have to endure low salaries and the permanent violation of their labour rights.
He concluded by demanding the presidential candidates to pronounce on these issues, which are urgent for the present and future of the country.
