On July 1, a delegation of the Confederation including Madan Talwar, the General Secretary of UNI Graphical & Packaging affiliate AINEF met the Prime Minister and appraised him of the real situation.
The Prime Minister gave a patient hearing to the delegation and promised “to do my duty”. The delegation comprised
M S Yadav (Confederation), M L Talwar (AINEF), Suresh Akhouri (IJU), Rajendra Prabhu (NUJ (I)) and M L Joshi (UNI Union).
Despite all attempts by a few newspaper employers to stall the wage board reports, the Cabinet Committee in its meeting on Thursday took up the issue of a notification of the recommendations of the two wage boards for journalists and other newspaper workers.
The decision was however deferred to the next meeting of the Cabinet Committee for want of a few clarifications. We hope the cabinet stamp will be put on the recommendations in this week.
ON June 28,Workers all over the country showed their unity by holding mass demonstrations at all newspaper publication centres in different states.
Though the employers refused to publish the unions’ point of view in their newspaper, the unions continued their campaign
through word of mouth, leaflets and other forms of protest to nail the lies being spread by some newspaper proprietors.
Confederation leaders continued to meet the ministers and all others who promised help.
Several political parties have pledged their support to and promised to raise the issue in Parliament.
Senior leaders of BJP, CPI(M), CPI and JD(U) alleged that the government was "dithering" on the issue as they want to serve the interests of corporate houses while leaving journalists and newspaper workers to fend for themselves.
