International Day for Elimination of Violence against Women
November 25th is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and the start of 16 days of action around the world to call for the end of all forms of violence against women
The 16 Days of Activism Campaign started in 1981 when participants in the first Women’s Global Leadership Institute chose to push for global action to eradicate violence against women on November 25 (the date marks the assassination of the Mirabal sisters in 1960 under the orders of the brutal Dominican Dictator Rafael Trujillo). December 10 is International Human Rights Day. In the 16 days between those two globally recognised dates, the campaign highlights that violence against women is a violation of their human rights.
In 1999, the UN officially joined the campaign after designating November 25 as the International Day for Elimination of Violence against Women.
UNI Global Union joins the International Campaign of the 16 Days of Activism. Women and men must fight against violence against women.
