About 100 demonstrators supporting the illegally sacked workers at the MMP Bootle plant in Liverpool demonstrated outside the Austrian meeting of MMP shareholders this week.
The demonstrators from 8 countries and MMP plants within Europe joined with their sacked colleagues from Liverpool to leaflet shareholders as they arrived for the annual shareholders meeting at the Grand Hotel in central Vienna.
A range of speakers addressed the demonstration including Phil Potter the FOC of the MMP Liverpool Chapel who gave an insight into the appalling and disgraceful behaviour of the MMP management towards the loyal workers at Bootle. Wolfgang Greif the International Secretary of the Austrian Graphical and Packaging Union GPA-DJP said that he expected Austrian companies who had subsidiaries abroad to exercise the same social responsibility in those factories that they do in Austria. Simon Dubbins from UNITE spoke about the illegality of MMP’s actions and told the demonstration that he would be attending the shareholders meeting and forcefully be putting the unions case on behalf of the sacked workers. Steve Walsh on behalf of UNI Global condemned MMP for their appalling behaviour and expressed solidarity support from Graphical and packaging workers throughout the world.
Letters of support have been received from many unions and unions in Mexico, Argentina, Brazil and Chile also delivered messages to the respective Austrian embassies in their countries calling on the government to insist that MMP abide by the UK and European legislation.
UNITE and the Liverpool workers have vowed to continue their campaign for justice, please sign the online petition at http://www.labourstart.org/cgi-bin/solidarityforever/show_campaign.cgi?c=1369
