Uruguayan president thanks bank worker union for fight for workers

The President of the Republic of Uruguay José Mujica greeted the members of “la Asociacion de Bancarios del Uruguay” (AEBU) which today celebrated its 70th anniversary in the auditorium Nelly Goitiño. He thanked them for their engagement and for the opportunity to share his opinions together with them in a democratic way. AEBU was founded May 5th, 1942 and was part of the founding of the “Central Nacional de Trabajadores,” now the PIT-CNT.
José Mujica thanked the bank workers for their commitment to improving the quality of life of Uruguayan workers. “Sincerely... 50 times we have fought each other and fighting against you is like fighting against a son, or a brother, because you definitively represent, in the struggle for your interests, a cause that is the cause of all workers who are always committed to do the necessary to step forward.”
He continued: “Sometimes we have to perform in places where we have to look at many different perspectives. We sometimes are fair and sometimes we make mistakes. But, definitely, my dear fellow workers, from the point of view of my tastes, from my heart, I am nothing but a complicated peasant and I regret that I can not work on the land, but I feel I am a worker like you. I do not know how I will leave this opportunity that the Uruguayan people gave me, but you have this assurance: I'm not going to buy any villa when I leave the presidency, I will neither leave my neighbourhood, leave my bowling alley, or my friends," he emphasized.
“But at the age I have, with success or failure, I try to do what will better the whole nation, the vast majority. Perhaps sometimes I am stupid and cannot do it. But you will be sure : in my successes or errors, I put my soul, all my commitment. When I leave from this world, no one will feel that, simply, I have carried a load that is not mine.”
“Because of this, workers, thank you for the hope, thank you for the fight, thank you for the agreements, for the disagreements and thank you for the freedom to be able to see each other and strengthen our connection, the freedom of being able to respect each other even when we have differences. Thank you dear workers” concluded the President.
