The UNI Europa Commerce Steering group has appointed John Hannett new UNI Europa Commerce President in its meeting held on 8 October 2012. This decision comes after the announcement by Jörgen Hoppe of his intention to step down and retire from his national and European functions.



Jörgen has served the trade union movement for more than 40 years and was elected UNI Europa Commerce President since 2000. He has been a key leader of the sector and supported the emergence of commerce unions in Central Eastern Europe as well as the strengthening of European Social Dialogue with employers organisations.

John Hannett is the General Secretary of the UK's fourth largest Union, Usdaw, the Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers. He was first elected General Secretary of the 422,000 strong Union in May 2004 and was re-elected in September 2008.

UNI Europa also welcomes Lars-Anders Häggström, President of Handels Sweden who will replace John Hannett as UNI Europa Commerce Vice-President.
