More than thirty postal and logistics trade unionists from across the Asia and Pacific region met in Bangkok this week to discuss the future of the industry and to coordinate work their work for the year ahead. Representatives from 18 unions were on hand at the meeting, which is being held ahead of a joint meeting between UNI Apro Post & Logistics and the Asian-Pacific Postal College, the postal academy run by the Asian-Pacific Postal Union.
The meeting focused on developing a common understanding of the issues that confront postal workers in the region as postal reform continues in the region. Many of the countries represented are in the process of modernising and reforming their postal services. Participants shared best practices and some pitfalls to avoid while posts undergo change.
Organising was also a priority for discussants. Some of the unions in attendance have begun to organise workers in multinational logistics companies like DHL and Linfox. Other unions discussed how they are working to push postal services to adapt to be more competitive in small packets and parcels as e-commerce continues to grow in the region.
Unions also discussed the importance of postal innovation as the key to providing quality postal services into the future. UNI Apro and its affiliate unions are keen to work with the APPU in implementing a program to share best practices and promote innovative postal services in the region. Among the developing products unions discussed at the meeting was the proliferation of postal financial services in the Asian-Pacific region.
Following the committee meeting are the annual joint seminar between UNI Apro and the Asian-Pacific Postal College and a seminar with the Thai affiliate SEWU-THP.
