A German private detective claims the company wanted to know about its employees’ relationships and finances and hid cameras to spy on staff. Its alleged bosses at Aldi had secret cameras installed in staff lockers.

One private detective told Germany’s Der Spiegel magazine that he had refused to carry out the instructions to spy on staff. The allegations go back to 2008.

The German article was quoted in the UK’s Daily Mail where the private detective was reported as saying, “'I was tasked with reporting all irregularities. So [I would report it] if a member of staff was working too slowly, or if I heard about them having a relationship with another member of staff, or received other details from their private lives, for example their financial situations.”

Aldi management refutes the claims which refer to stores in the south of Germany.

UNI Global Union Head of Commerce, Alke Boessiger, said “These are serious allegations and should be thoroughly investigated. These claims go to the heart of human and workers’ rights.”
