Nyon, February 7 - Yesterday’s murder of Mr Chokri Belaïd, a prominent political figure and Secretary General of the leftist Democratic Patriotic Party, takes place amid repeated attacks on union leaders, journalists, political activists, artists, and simple citizens, many of which weren't investigated, let alone prosecuted.



UNI calls upon the competent authorities to ensure perpetrators of such murders and attacks are promptly brought to justice. The Tunisian authorities should take all the necessary measures to address such violence through investigation and prosecution.



A letter of protest was sent today to the Tunisian Prime Minister, signed by Mr Philip Jennings, Secretary General of UNI Global Union. “This killing must not go unpunished," Jennings said. "Authorities should take corrective action to ensure that all politicians in Tunisia have the right of free speech without fear of reprisals or assassination. The protection of democracy is of paramount importance to the people of Tunisia as it is to the rest of the world."
