On 20 April 2013 in Asuncion, Paraguay, a delegation represented by Marvin Largaespada from UNI America, Eligio Brittez, Jose Vazquez and Roberto Florentin from the Paraguayan trade union SITEPROPASA met with MEP Andres Perello Rodriguez, Vice President of the Delegation to the Euro-Latin American Parliamentary Assembly, member of the Spanish Socialist Delegation and of the European Parliament Committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety. The aim of the meeting was to provide an update regarding the lawsuits and legal proceedings against Prosegur Paraguay for the massive layoffs of 327 employees.
In September of 2012, UNI had already denounced the situation with the European Parliament in a public hearing organised by the S&D group (Socialists and Democrats). The meeting of April 20th was a continuation of that effort, since at that time the group committed to support steps taken by UNI to file a complaint to the ILO. The complaint was finally sent to the ILO on October 30th and communicated to the Paraguayan Government on March 4th whose reply was due one month later but up until today has not occurred.
The MEP said that the S&D will continue to support this legitimate cause as well as the demands of the dismissed workers with a view to restore justice and preserve labour and trade union rights which have been violated for over 9 months now. MEPs have indicated their full support for workers’ Complaint with the ILO. “As a group of MEPs, we cannot allow European companies, and especially Spanish ones, to violate national and international labour rights in Paraguay. We will bring these claims to instances where economic issues are discussed to ask for respect of labour and trade union rights", he said.
