World Environment Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly to mark the opening of the 1972 Stockholm Conference.
Celebrating World Environment Day is about the inspirational power of individual actions that collectively become an exponential force for positive change.
This year, the World Environment Day theme is Think.Eat.Save.
The aim is to encourage the public worldwide to reduce foodprint by becoming more aware of the environmental impact of food waste and loss across the food supply chain.
The theme emboldens each one of us to take action from our homes and then witness the power of the collective decisions you and others have made to reduce food waste, save money and minimise environmental impacts.
Past World Environment Day thematic celebrations included caring for the forests, the ozone layer, desertification and sustainable development, to mention a few.
World Environment Day is celebrated around the world in many ways, including street rallies, bicycle parades, green concerts, essay and poster competitions in schools, tree planting, recycling efforts, clean-up campaigns and much more.
When we see or experience the negative effects of climate change and environmental degradation, it is easy to blame others - governments for not prioritizing environmental policy; corporate organizations for raising greenhouse gas emissions; NGOs for not lobbying strongly enough for the environment; and individuals for not taking action. World Environment Day however is a day we put aside our differences and instead celebrate achievements made towards protecting the environment.
UNI Global Union and its affiliates join the rest of the world to celebrate the World Environment Day. By doing so, we remind ourselves and others of the importance of caring for our environment.
