Sri Lankan Health Services Trade Union Alliance (HSTUA) has obtained a court injunction preventing misleading media advertisements and sale of milk products imported from New Zealand contaminated with DCD.



Fonterra products supplied New Zealand dairy giant suspected of being contaminated with the toxic agricultural chemical dicyandiamide (DCD) were still on the market despite an order from the health ministry to recall them.



The union was concerned that patients receiving treatment in hospitals may be given the imported Whey Protein health supplementary.

HSTUA’s President Saman Rathnapriya said that the union has requested the Director General of Health Services to remove DCD contaminated milk products from hospitals. Tests conducted by Sri Lanka's Industrial Technology Institute (ITI) has found DCD in some Fonterra milk powders and the Sri Lanka Health Ministry has ordered their recall. Fonterra disputed the accuracy of the testing, but informed Reuters it had recalled two batches of Anchor-branded product in accordance with the ministry directive. The District Court of Gampaha on 21st August 2013 issued a summon to Fonterra Brands Lanka, the local company of New Zealand's Fonterra, and four of its top officials to face contempt of court charges for not adhering to an earlier ruling that banned sales and advertising of all Fonterra milk products.
