From Casablanca to Tunis! One year ago in Casablanca, the first seminar around the establishing of a strong network in post and a better cooperation of trade unions in the region was a great success. Now as a second step this cooperation should be enlarged and deepened. Unions from 11 different countries discuss on the first day about the importance of the internationalisation of union work within UNI and the empowerment of women.
'Around 50% of the workers are women, if we don't start to organise women in our trade unions and integrate them in our structures, we exclude 50% of the entire workforce in the countries' underlined Cornelia Broos, policy officer in UNI Europa for Post & Logistics. The two presenters of the day professor Hayet Yaakoubi and professor Naima Hammami emphasized the fact that not only a change in legislation is necessary but also the political will and the efforts of the leadership. Trade unions and the society have to invest in studies and surveys about the situation of women and to ask what are the needs, problems and demands of women.
Over two days, an exchange on the different situations and an action plan will be established. Also the important topic of liberalisation and privatisation in the postal sector will be on the agenda. The organisation in trade unions should be part of daily life for workers and not a challenge with fear and threats. A new coordinator of the region will ensure continuous work and regular communication between the colleagues. An active solidarity between the colleagues in the region, with the colleagues in Europe and all over the world will ensure that the workers in the MENA MED region together with their trade unions navigate to a secure and good future.
