Unemployment tops 200 million, ILO report finds

The weak global economic recovery has failed to lead to an improvement in global labour markets, with unemployment in 2013 reaching almost 202 million the ILO says in a new report ahead of the World Economic Forum in Davos.

Reacting to the report, UNI Global Union General Secretary Philip Jennings said: “Growth is weak, unemployment is rising and half of those that have jobs are vulnerable. Is this what they call an economic recovery?"

Jennings to Guardian: Cambodia must investigate worker deaths

UNI Global Union General Secretary Philip Jennings has demanded answers from the Cambodian government over the deaths of workers protesting for a fair wage.

Speaking in the Guardian, Jennings said: "These protests were the legitimate action of Cambodian workers who should be protected and afforded their right to campaign for a decent wage. We are pleased that a group of retailers shares our concerns about the rights of workers and is calling on the government to investigate this use of deadly force."

Re-Launch: UNI SLAC Youth elects new committee

The UNI SLAC Youth has elected its new committee led by President Janath Prasanka from FBSOL and Secretary Norika Warnasuriya from NPTWU at its re-launch meeting held on 15 January 2014 at Colombo, Sri Lanka.

The meeting was attended by youth representatives, between 18 – 35 years of age, nominated from UNI’s nine affiliates in Sri Lanka. The meeting drew participation from women unionists, maintaining a good gender balance.

Federal agency issues Walmart workers' rights complaint

Walmart faces its largest ever legal complaint for abusing workers’ rights after a federal agency filed a grievance against the union-busting retail giant.

The National Labor Relations Board issued the complaint this week, accusing Walmart of breaking federal labour law by threatening, disciplining or firing workers who took part in strikes in 14 states in 2012.

Chancellor must not look the other way as RBS pays senior bankers bonuses, says Unite

Unite the union, which represents the workforce at Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS), has expressed disgust that the bank may pay its senior bankers potential bonuses of 200 per cent of their salaries.

As working people up and down the country continue to struggle to meet everyday bills, with prices still rising at double the rate of wages, Unite asks how can the chancellor, George Osborne, allow the bank he controls to increase the bonuses of its already highly paid top employees?
