UNICOME Malaysia's meeting its organising challenge

|
Achieving 14 registered trade unions in the commerce sector representing over 20,000 employers and a growing membership under the UNICOME Malaysia project by UNI MLC with UNI, UNI Apro and LO TCO Sweden in organising the commerce sector in Malaysia was a welcome achievement.
In the briefing by Bro. Shafie B.P. Mammal, President of UNI MLC, he highlighted the progress made in each of the unions and some of the hardship faced by the organisers and trade union leaders in carryout their duties in representing the members under their care. The commerce sector is an industry which its employees are working on shifts with many types of work and high turnover as the benefits working in this industry is still considered as not highly skilled labour. Thus the organisers and the trade union leaders faces a lot of difficulties in setting up the unions and in some cases, faces some discrimination and anti-union attitude from the management. Employees in this industry are desirous of forming trade unions as a step to improve further the industrial relations in the workplace, provide constructive feedback on how to improve the business & profitability and at the same time build a career in the commerce sector by upgrading the service & product knowledge. It is hoped that if the management could recognise the benefits of having a trade union in the work place, it would be beneficial to both the company and its employees. In the Evaluation attended by Shafie B.P. Mammal (UNI MLC), Marie K.Nelving (UNIONEN), David Eklind (Handels), Neil Anderson (UNI SCORE), Alice Chang (UNI Apro) and organisers on 30N0v and 1Dec2011, the team also took the opportunity to build strategies to strengthen the organising process in UNICOME Malaysia. During the evaluation, the team took the opportunity to meet with the IKEA Malaysia Trade union and IKEA Management on 30Nov2011. The evaluation team recognise the work achieved thus far and is also pleased that UNICOME Malaysia had received the ‘Organising’ Trophy in the UNI World Congress in Nagasaki in 2010 in Japan. Recognition well deserved! Keep up the great work! UNICOME Malaysia Boleh! |
