UNI Global Union General Secretary, Philip Jennings, has been getting the union message across to top tier broadcast media, CNN and CNBC, at the start of Davos.
Jennings was crystal clear, there is major question mark over whether President Trump will deliver on jobs and a growing chasm between rich and poor, which he described as the “Davos Gap*, a reference to the business and political elite gathered in Davos.
When CNN host Richard Quest suggested that Trump had already delivered by intervening certain labour disputes, Jennings firmly pointed out that Trump was taking credit for the work of unions on the ground. A point that Quest conceded.
At the end of the interview, Quest asked Jennings to put a cross on a line to gauge the most pressing needs of our time. Jennings underlined “JOBS”.

On CNBC, Jennings spelt out the dangers of rising inequality. Jennings said “There had been a very strong political backlash. The promises made by Davos Man have not worked. Trickle down has not worked. Leave it to us and we will bring prosperity to all, simply hasn’t worked.
“The Davos Gap has grown, we’ve seen market failures in many respects from the environment to the financial markets. The failure of the markets is jeopardizing our democracies:

Jennings drew special attention to Andrew Puzder, Trump’s pick for Labour Secretary, who has attacked the minimum wage and collective bargaining.
