UNI says the success of the general strike in Italy, demonstrates the depth of anger felt by workers at Prime Berlusconi's proposed budget cuts. UNI stands in solidarity with workers participating in the strike led by the CGIL union, which was well observed across the country.



"We are striking against measures that are unjust. We are striking against measures that are irresponsible, and which put the whole of the burden on public sector workers," said Susanna Camusso, the new leader of the CGIL.

Camusso said that the proposed 45.5 billion euro austerity package had to be placed with a fairer deal. She added that the current proposal would not only fail to create jobs it would put too much of a burden on current workers. The union leader said the CGIL was prepared to take court action to stop Berlusconi’s austerity measures.

The strike was well supported by transport workers across the country as well a hospital, postal and bank workers. Union members from Fiat and other Italian manufacturers also showed their solidarity by joining in the day of action.
