As Americans gear up for the Thanksgiving holiday and the following day, a massive shopping day called as "Black Friday", Hansen says that many US retail workers who don't have union representation will have no voice in their schedules and may feel forced forgo holiday time with their families.



While UFCW members working for Macy's, Bloomingdale's, Modell's and H&M earn premium pay for working holidays, non-union employers like Target and Walmart may not pay a holiday premium and some of their workers may feel forced to work out of fear of losing their jobs if they refuse, Hansen says in the article.



"Respect for the retail workers who are the heart of events like Black Friday means fair compensation for holiday hours and a voice in scheduling," he writes. "When we support workers coming together to make positive changes in the workplace, we all win."
