UN Global Union gave a 2017 Breaking Through award to honour outstanding membership growth to the Trade Union Federation of Commerce Romania, who increased their membership in Carrefour by over 70 percent, bringing in 4,000 new members within a nine-month period.

Vasile Leescu, a leader of the union, received the Award. He said, “We consulted with UNI to help us grow. We went from 61 to 72 percent density in carrefour Romania. It increased our strength in our industrial relations. United we are a force!”

Carrefour was a brownfield site (building on an existing union structure), and the company has a Global Agreement with UNI. Mr. Leescu has previously called these agreements “oxygen" to organizing in countries like Romania.
