This decision was announced as the 2010 second quarter financial results were presented. They showed a fall in net profits of 96% from € 81 million a year earlier to € 3 million this July. This was in part explained by a charge of €168 million that TNT is paying to restructure its mail operations in the Netherlands. In deed, the company had decided earlier on to end full-time positions and replace them by more flexible temporary staff.

Amongst the reasons that can explain the decision to split the operations are: the decline in mail volumes, whereas Express operations are expanding; pressure from shareholders, and the way the postal liberalisation in the EU is heading.
