“We are already seeing results from our Breaking Through plan as our member unions grow their membership and increase their bargaining power to improve working conditions for workers around the world,” said Head of UNI SCORE Neil Anderson. “We are working closely with unions that support our work to ensure our unions win more victories for workers.”



The meeting brought together 17 support organisations from 10 countries to discuss strategies to support unions in key countries.



UNI’s breaking through plan will support organising and bargaining rights for workers in the services sector and help build alliances among unions representing workers at multinationals, UNI General Secretary Philip Jennings told the group.



This plan includes support for unions in the Middle East and North Africa, where UNI is offering a broad range of support to unions.



In Tunisia, UNI is working with private sector cleaners, who just won the right to their first collective agreement, which will have a huge impact on improving their working conditions and raising their wages above poverty levels. In Egypt, UNI is supporting a new independent telecommunications union that is demanding better conditions and more transparency at Egypt Telecom.



While the global focus has been on the Middle East and the excitement of the results of the Arab Spring, UNI has an ambitious plan in place to support unions around the world, including Russia, South Africa, Colombia and Malaysia.
