The power of Twitter hit home for Jennings on Wednesday when a tweet he wrote in the coffee bar at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, was read on CNN by a presenter.



As the tweet was broadcast across the globe, one staff member in the UNI head office in Nyon got an email from her American mother on vacation in Panama that said she had just heard Jennings tweet broadcast by CNN host Richard Quest on his programme.



The story is just another example of how connected everyone is thanks to social media.



More and more trade unions are realizing the power of “tweets”, “status updates” and “likes” as they take their message to the masses via social media.



“Tweets” are the short (140 character) messages sent out on Twitter, the social media site that let’s users share their news and ideas via mobile phone and computer.



UNI has embraced social media and now shares its news on Twitter with @UNIGlobalUnion and Jennings tweets himself at @PJenningsUNI. UNI also shares news on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/UNIGlobalUnion via status updates and posting on its Facebook “wall”.



We now communicate with more than 2000 UNI members and supporters on Facebook on a daily basis. Many UNI affiliates are also on Facebook, updating their status with the work that they are doing and allowing their rank and file members to communicate with their leadership. UNI will keep looking at new social media platforms that allow us to reach out to more people.
