Barclay's 1700 jobs cut dents confidence in the Bank

Barclays informed  its workforce on November 14 that it will be reducing 1,700 frontline roles from across its branch network. Cashiers, personal  bankers,  operational specialists,  branch  managers and assistant manager roles will be cut throughout 2014.  This is on top of last week's announcements of the closure of the Coventry and Dartford centres, which put around 600 workers at risk of redundancy.

Filpac-CGT supports the strike organised on 12th November by the Dutch workers of DS Smith in the plant in Tilburg, Netherlands

Following the failure of the negotiation launched since March 2013 between the Dutch trade union and the Management of DS Smith in view to get a pay increase of 1.5% for their workers, the Dutch trade union decided on 12 November to organise a strike in the plant in Tilburg. More than 50 workers went on strike and they were joined by colleagues from the plants in Eerbeek en Zaandam. On 13 November FILPAC-CGT from France published a press release to show the solidarity and the support of the French workers with their Dutch colleagues from DS Smith.

Violence against women is a persistent world-wide problem, and occurs in every age and economic group. The perpetrators of that violence are often well known to their targets. Domestic violence, in particular, continues to be frighteningly common, and to be accepted as “normal” within many societies. As a matter of fact, up to 70% of women will experience violence during their lives and among women aged between 15 and 44 years, acts of violence cause more death and disability than cancer, malaria, traffic accidents and war combined.

UNIMED: towards a European social pact for a sustainable finance sector

On 14 November 2013, the UNIMED financial sector unions met in Valencia, Spain.  The group, composed of trade unions from Cyprus, Greece, Italy, Malta, Portugal, Spain and Turkey held a joint meeting with their sister organisations from the southern shore of the Mediterranean including Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Jordan, Israel, and the Lebanon. The federation represents 500,000 workers employed in the finance industry.A sustainable financial sector is at the service of the real economy, of sustainable development, of professionalism and human dignity.

UNI honours labour heroes at World Executive
