Hot on the heels of reports this week that Deutsche Telekom’s biggest shareholders want to exit the poorly performing UK market, the company has released first quarter results showing €1.1 billion losses.



During the same period last year, DT earned a profit of €924m.



The company has stated plans to increase investment in the US, but is considering a range of options for its UK operations, including sale and merger.



DT is not the only telco being hit by global recessionary pressures, with France Telecom reporting a decrease in revenue this week and Telenor’s profits falling 65%.



Many influential world leaders, including U.S. President Obama and U.K. Prime Minister Gordon Brown, are engaging in dialogue with unions on the subject of economic recovery. UNI Telecom and its affiliates are calling on companies like Deutsche Telekom to do the same and to acknowledge the vital role unions play in building a strong and sustainable economy.
