UNI Global Union, including its 20 million members worldwide, offers its most sincere condolences to the people of Kenya in the face of the ongoing terrorist activities in the capital Nairobi.

General Secretary Philip Jennings said, “This will not shake Kenya’s spirit. It will not shake our commitment to solidarity with the people of this great country. I speak for the entire UNI Global Union family in sending our most sincere condolences to their families, and all families affected by this senseless act.”

"A week ago, I was in Nairobi addressing affiliate unions at UNI Global Union’s Regional Africa Conference. The Labour Secretary had opened the conference by pledging closer ties with the labour movement for the benefit of Kenya’s working people. We return that pledge now and affirm that this will only deepen our commitment to work closely with COTU and Kenya’s trade unions. 400 union leaders from 100 unions and 40 countries came together for a successful meeting in Nairobi last week and we are all behind you in this hour of need.”

“We fully empathise with the people caught up in the attacks. Affiliates from UNI’s commerce sector were holding a meeting in the Westgate shopping centre on the day the attacks began. UNI staff are all accounted for but we are aware that others were not so lucky including a number of security guards at the centre, killed in the line of duty, who were members of UNI affiliate, the Kenya National Private Security Workers Union (KNPSWU). Our thoughts are with their families."
