UNI General Secretary Philip Jennings was the subject of an extensive interview with Swiss newspaper La Cote on the digital revolution and its challenges. Speaking to journalist Didier Sandoz, Jennings urged caution and serious reflection on the possible developments in the future world of work. 

Jennings, who was appointed as a member of the influential ILO Commission on Future World of Work, talked about the importance of standing up for workers in the new world of work.

“Our research shows that there is a huge potential of machines replacing workers. The OECD estimates that two-thirds of jobs around the world are threatened,” explained Jennings. “Our mission is to make sure that the separation between private and professional life is respected and enshrined in this hyperconnected world of work.”

“We are not alone in our worries about the effects of the digital revolution. The IMF, the OECD are also dedicating significant resources to tackling the challenges we face.”

“We are not resistant to the idea of technology – we just want a sustainable world of work that functions for workers. The big 6 have a near monopoly on data and platforms like Uber have drivers who are registered as “independents” so that they don’t have any of the normal obligations or safety nets of an employment contract. Let’s not kid ourselves though, we are the David against Goliath here.”
