UNI Global Union  General Secretary Philip Jennings commenting on the result of the UK election said, “Labour’s surge was built on the back of a positive campaign where leader Jeremy Corbyn promised to look out for working people, and fight austerity and inequality.

The UNI GS said, "I am delighted to see Labour do so well when they had been written off. All over the world people are rising up against austerity and the current massive levels of income and wealth inequality. The Labour Manifesto was not shy in tackling gross inequalities in the workplace. Under a Labour government zero hour

 contracts would be scrapped so that companies such as Deliveroo could no longer treat workers like disposable pawns in game aimed at maximizing profit. Labour would also shift the burden of proof so that ‘the law assumes a worker is an employee unless the employer can prove otherwise.’”

“Labour gets the message that ‘workers deserve a pay rise’ and that has resonated with voters, especially young voters.

“We look forward to receiving Jeremy Corbyn at our UNI Global Union Conference in Liverpool in 2018.”

The leader of the TUC in the UK, Francis O’ Grady, said the election had been about ‘bread and butter issues’ and what needed to change for working people.

O’Grady reacting to the election result said, “The next government must deliver a new deal for working people. They should implement popular policies from the campaign – like banning zero hour contracts, pushing up the minimum wage and delivering a long overdue pay rise for nurses, midwives and all public servants.

“And it’s clear that there is no mandate for a no-deal Brexit. The government should go back to the drawing board and negotiate a Brexit deal that puts UK jobs, decent wages and workers' rights first.”
