Over 40,000 CWA members at AT&T stage three-day strike

40,000 CWA union members from AT&T across the US staged a three-day strike from Friday to Sunday to defend their jobs against rampant outsourcing by the company.

Over half the workers who stopped work were contact centre and retail workers for AT&T Mobility, the mobile arm of AT&T. Contact centre workers are concerned for their job security with AT&T moving work to low-wage contractors, including at offshore locations.

Workers from AT&T’s pay-tv division, DirecTV also took strike action in the west of the country. The DirecTV and AT&T mobility workers were also joined by employees from the fixed-line part of the business in California, Nevada and Connecticut.

Aside from concerns about outsourcing, AT&T workers also are worried about the company increasing costs for employees’ healthcare plans.

AT&T and CWA will meet today to discuss a resolution to the dispute.
