UniPHIN Nepal, Union of Private Hospitals and Healthcare Workers in Nepal, successfully established the first-ever women’s committee on 19. April 2017 with newly elected nine committee members in the Women Empowerment Course attended by 42 women leaders representing its affiliate unions and one of care unions directly affiliating to UNI Nepal Liaison Council.

Ms. Rojila Karki from Kathmandu Medical College Teaching Hospital Union was unanimously elected as the president. Giving her first speech representing the committee, she promised her strong commitment to achieving decent work for women workers in the private health care sector through organizing them.

Women dominate the sector in Nepal. However, their working conditions are not even at the satisfactory level and women representation in the union decision-making structures remains very low. The formation of the women’s committee could be a landmark achievement, surely contributing to increase women participation in various union activities and enhance women representation in the union decision-making bodies.

The program was facilitated and observed by Brother Rajendra Acharya, UNI Apro Assistant Regional Secretary, Brother Satoshi Tamai, Director for UNI Apro Organizing and Campaigns and Coordinator for UNICARE Apro Activities and officials from UNI NLC and UniPHIN. In the Women Empowerment Course, organizing strategies, leadership skills and roles of women committee were discussed.
