On 25th April the Head of UNI Graphical & Packaging Javier Carlés visited the offices of CCOO in Madrid. He was received by the Secretary General of CCOO Graphical, Paper and Photography Joaquina Rodriguez and by Manuel Fernández. Their meeting was about the situation of the printing industry and packaging in Spain, the struggles and challenges of CCOO, and the overall strategy of UNI G&P.
The fact that in the last 10 years the number of employees in the Spanish graphical industry fell from 120,000 to 80,000 workers, has branded the agenda of CCOO Graphical, Paper and Photography. At the same time the right-wing government has cut rights and benefits of workers, and has persecuted and imprisoned trade unionists.
CCOO Graphical, Paper and Photography has members and committees in multinational companies such as Tetra Pak, Smurfit Kappa, DS Smith, Kimberly-Clark, Armcor and SCA. It also has organising in the publishing sector, the press sector, the commercial sector and in the security printing. This gives the union a broad and solid foundation for national and international work.
The progress of CCOO in the publishing sector, organizing new workers, is an example that even in today's tough conditions, it is possible to grow in unionization. In this area and in collective bargaining, CCOO has successes to share. It intends to strengthen ties with Latin America and North Africa to contribute with its experience.
The extensive and fraternal meeting between the Head of UNI Graphical & Packaging and CCOO Graphical, Paper and Photography, culminated with a review of the activity of the sector on the global level over the last 4 years up to the Istanbul Conference in 2015 and from there to the present, the result of which the Secretary General of CCOO Graphical, Joaquina Rodriguez, is also Vice President of UNI G&P.
