Cleaners in California’s second largest city held a vibrant and powerful protest in the 24 hours before their collective contract ended on Friday at midnight.

While keeping the city’s office blocks clean many of these workers cannot afford to even live in San Diego. Many of these cleaners are undocumented immigrants with pay so low that they are forced to live in Mexico and commute approximately 4 hours per day. On top of the low pay, sexual assault by unscrupulous night supervisors is also an issue which is why the union members are fighting to improve the health insurance and specific wording in the new agreement to protect the female staff.

The SEIU members authorized continued strike action and are risking arrest to fight for better pay and health and safety on the job. UNI Global Union stands with the San Diego cleaners in their time of struggle. With your passion and solidarity we are confident of another victory for cleaners.
