First Global Day of Action at Citibank
On Tuesday, 15 March, we, unions affiliated with UNI Americas Finance, will hold our First Global Day of Action at Citibank in the face of the bank's decision to discontinue its retail banking business in Latin America. The decision affects men and women workers of Brazil, Argentina, and Colombia and endangers their jobs and source of sustenance for their families, while the bank continues to fail to comply with salary and labor commitments.
In the face of this situation, we, unions affiliated with UNI Global Union, are carrying out various activities to protest and to lodge complaints with government officials and with the company; with Citibank N.A. world's top authority, and with CEOs in the various countries affected by the decision. Sergio Palazzo, president of UNI Americas Finance, demanded that the president of Citibank N.A. preserve jobs and resolve all of labor and salary irregularities such as, for instance, unpaid overtime hours to men and women workers.
The above business decision, which affects thousands of jobs in the region, reflects a lack of commercial policy and social commitment by Citibank N.A. in Latin America and conveys a serious message about a drop in consumption expectations. We, men and women working in banks in Latin America, are in state of alert and mobilization and demand that the jobs and rights of Citibank employees be guaranteed.
Philip Jennings, general secretary of UNI; and Marcio Monzane, head of UNI Global Finance, have lodged a complaint with Michael Corbat, executive director of the Citibank Group, and unions around the world made their voices heard by presidents and local CEOs.
We, united bank employees affiliated with UNI Global Union, are holding the Global Day of Action at Citibank because IF THEY TOUCH ONE US, THEY ARE TOUCHING ALL OF US!
