At the 4th UNI World Congress, General Secretary of the ITUC, Sharan Burrow raised the roof with an impassioned speech that endorsed and commended UNI’s “Breaking Through” plan.

“You are breaking through. You are organizing against injustice and you are inspiring workers everywhere to hope, to act and to organize for rights safe work and fair wages. You are inspiring working people to fight to tame corporate power.”

After congratulating UNI for its huge achievements, Burrow did not shirk from the challenges that lie ahead for the global labour movement saying “We must celebrate our wins but also lay out the game plan for the coming years, because we have even more work to do to see this world back on track.”

“Globally, corporate greed is out of control. Yet together, we are winning, we are growing unions and we are challenging corporate power.”

“By 2018, the global labour movement is projected to number 200 million by 2018. As the largest democratic force on earth, we are, and must continue to be both the voice of opposition and the voice of progress.”

“Here in South Africa, Nelson Mandela recognized the strength of the organised working class – we represent that strength, and with you, we will break through!”
