On the 11th of June the Belgian multinational Delhaize has announced a draconic transformation plan.

From the beginning it was clear that this plan entailed mass dismissals (up to 2.500 employees). Apart from that the company wanted to work on a changed, simplified organizational structure for the supermarkets with adapted wages and labour conditions for the personnel. During the works council meeting of the 15th of October, the management has clarified its intentions with regard to the adaptation of this conditions. They talk about a decline in the gross wages of 90 euros per month, the freezing of seniority allowances, deleting bonuses,…!

For the joint trade union front, this is a real declaration of war. Immediately after informing the employees, spontaneous actions broke out.

On the 17th of October 109 out of 138 stores were closed because of trade union actions. This is a clear sign from the Delhaize employees towards management.
